Shore Acres State Park
Oregon, United States
Shore Acres State Park in Oregon was originally the grand oceanfront estate of timber baron Louis J. Simpson, who built a luxurious mansion and formal gardens with trees, shrubs, and flowering plants from around the world in the early 1900s.
The estate featured a Japanese-style garden with a 100-foot lily pond, a large ballroom, and an indoor heated pool. After a fire destroyed the mansion in 1921, Simpson began constructing an even larger replacement, but financial losses during the Great Depression caused the property to fall into disrepair. The state purchased the land in 1942, converting it into a public park.
While the mansion was eventually demolished, the gardens were restored and continue to attract many visitors. The park offers spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean from sandstone cliffs, hiking trails, beach access, and opportunities for whale watching, especially during the winter months. Seasonal attractions include the popular Holiday Lights display from Thanksgiving through New Year's.
The park blends rugged natural beauty with carefully curated horticulture, making it a favorite destination along the Oregon Coast.
