Shumen Fortress
Shumen, Bulgaria
Shumen Fortress in Bulgaria is one of the country's oldest and most historically rich fortifications, with origins tracing back around 3200 years to Thracian times.
It was later expanded and reinforced by the Romans, Byzantines, and Bulgarians, serving as a key defensive and administrative center through various empires. During the First Bulgarian Empire, its strategic location near the old capitals Pliska and Preslav made it crucial for defense, while in the Second Bulgarian Empire the town of Shumen grew around it as an economic and cultural hub.
The fortress features three layers of walls from Roman, Byzantine, and Bulgarian periods, and archaeological digs have revealed 12 churches, a Roman bath, and other artifacts reflecting its long history. It was destroyed in 1444 after a siege by crusaders led by Vladislav Varnenchik but was never rebuilt. Today, the fortress stands as a celebrated monument, telling the story of Bulgaria’s ancient, medieval, and early modern past, and offers extensive insight into the military and daily life of its various inhabitants over the centuries.
