Vishegrad Fortress
Bulgaria, Bulgaria
Vishegrad Fortress is a medieval stronghold perched on a 306-meter promontory above the Arda River valley in Bulgaria's Rhodope Mountains, near Kardzhali.
Dating back to Thracian origins around 1200-1100 BC with major Late Roman and medieval expansions, its thick stone walls—up to 2.5 meters wide—once guarded key trade routes as the residence of the Achridos governor during Bulgaria's First and Second Empires.
Destroyed in the 14th-century Bulgarian-Ottoman wars, the site now reveals excavated ruins including a chapel, dwellings, and a narrow southeastern entrance, offering panoramic views toward nearby Monyak Fortress.
