Shusha Fortress in Shusha, Azerbaijan, was built in the mid-18th century by Panah Ali Khan, founder of the Karabakh Khanate, as a strong defensive fortification designed to protect the city from invaders.

The fortress occupies a mountainous plateau with natural defenses of steep cliffs and forests on most sides, with walls about 8 km long, 5 meters high, and over 2 meters thick. Its layout follows the rugged terrain with a polyline shape, featuring towers that protrude from the walls for added defense, and includes a large inner complex with the khan’s palaces, mosques, and bathhouses.

The fortress was strategically positioned to oversee and defend the surrounding area, with design aspects reflecting local architecture and military needs of the period. Despite damage from warfare, it remains a key symbol of Karabakh’s history and architectural heritageShusha Fortress.
