Smithsonian Castle
Washington, District of Columbia, USA, United States
The Smithsonian Castle, officially the Smithsonian Institution Building, is an iconic red sandstone structure in Norman Revival style on Washington, D.C.'s National Mall, completed in 1855 as the Smithsonian's first home.
Designed by architect James Renwick Jr., it originally housed the institution's entire operations, including exhibits, labs, and the secretary's residence, before becoming its administrative hub and visitor center.
Currently closed for a major renovation since February 2023, it will temporarily reopen from Memorial Day to Labor Day in 2026 with a visitor center, café, shop, and an exhibit on American ideals tied to the nation's 250th anniversary.
