The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex—a sprawling constellation of knowledge and culture often referred to as “the nation’s attic.” Established in 1846 through a bequest from British scientist James Smithson, its mission is “the increase and diffusion of knowledge,” and it fulfills that promise on a grand scale.

The Institution encompasses 21 museums, 21 libraries, 14 research and education centers, and the National Zoo, most of which are located along the National Mall. Its collections include over 157 million objects, ranging from the Apollo 11 command module and the Hope Diamond to ancient fossils and priceless works of art.
