Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden in Staten Island, New York, originally opened in the 19th century as a retirement home for aged sailors.
It spans 83 acres and includes more than 20 historic buildings in styles such as Greek Revival, Beaux-Arts, and Victorian, surrounded by extensively landscaped grounds and gardens. Over time, it transformed from a charitable institution into a vibrant cultural and botanical center, featuring nine thematic gardens across 53 acres of parkland, including the renowned New York Chinese Scholar’s Garden, a faithful recreation of an 18th-century Ming Dynasty garden.
The site also contains 20 acres of wetlands, a boxwood maze, fragrance and rose gardens, and a pleached hornbeam allée. Snug Harbor serves as a hub for arts, history, horticulture, and community activities, hosting museums, contemporary art centers, children’s museums, and maritime collections.
It is recognized as a National Historic Landmark and affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution, dedicated to conservation, education, and cultural vibrancy reflecting Staten Island’s diverse population. The center offers a welcoming natural oasis along with dynamic artistic and educational programming for visitors of all ages.
