Sonnenstein Castle in Pirna, Germany, overlooks the Elbe River and originated as a medieval fortress built after 1460, later converted into a pioneering psychiatric hospital in 1811 that gained fame for humane treatment reforms in the 19th century.
During World War II, from 1940 to 1942, Nazis transformed part of it into a euthanasia center under Aktion T4, where over 13,000 people with disabilities were murdered using gas chambers and crematoria before operations ceased and evidence was dismantled.
Postwar, it served various uses including a military hospital and rehabilitation center, and today houses a memorial museum documenting the site's tragic history and offering panoramic views.
