Sorrento is a historic coastal town in Campania, Italy, overlooking the Bay of Naples, with origins dating back to the 6th century BC when it was founded by the Greeks as Surreo. Known as Surrentum during Roman times, it was favored by Roman aristocrats who built elegant villas along the coast, and the town became an important trade and cultural hub.

Throughout the medieval and Byzantine eras, Sorrento fortified itself and maintained autonomy at times, even resisting Lombard sieges. In 1558, it was attacked by Ottoman forces but later rebuilt and flourished. The town features a picturesque historic center with narrow streets, churches, and old fortifications.

Sorrento has long been a beloved tourist destination, known for its stunning views of Mount Vesuvius and the sea, traditional lemon groves, artisanal crafts like woodwork and leather goods, and literary connections with poets like Torquato Tasso.
