Spantekow Fortress
Spantekow, Germany, Germany
Spantekow Fortress in Spantekow, Germany, is the oldest and most significant Renaissance ring fort in northern Germany, built on an artificial island surrounded by a water-filled moat in an irregular square layout covering about 4 hectares.
Originally a medieval castle likely from the 12th century, it was completely rebuilt from 1558 to 1587 by Lord High Steward Ulrich von Schwerin and his wife Anna after wartime destruction, featuring Italian-inspired bastions and walls.
It played key roles in conflicts like the Thirty Years' War and Swedish-Brandenburgian War, later serving as a noble residence until expropriated in 1945, with remnants including two bastions, a gatehouse, and walls now under renovation for cultural use.
