Verified Speyerer Dom

Speyer, Germany, Germany

The Speyerer Dom (Speyer Cathedral), officially the Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Stephen, is the largest surviving Romanesque church in the world and one of Germany’s most significant architectural masterpieces, located in Speyer, Rhineland-Palatinate.

Commissioned around 1025 by Salem Emperor Conrad II with the ambition to build the largest church in Christendom, construction took about 30 years and the cathedral was consecrated in 1061 under his grandson, Emperor Henry IV. Measuring 134 meters (440 feet) in length, this massive three-nave basilica features four symmetrical towers, a grand crypt that is Europe’s largest Romaneske columned hall, and innovative architectural elements like the blind-arcade system and surrounding gallery that influenced Romanesque design for centuries.

The cathedral served as the imperial burial site for four Salian emperors, several Staufian and Habsburg kings, three empresses, and over 40 bishops, making it a powerful symbol of medieval imperial authority. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981, it remains an active cathedral and the seat of the Bishop of Speyer, while visitors can explore the royal tombs, admire the pink sandstone facade, and see the famous “Domnapf”—a 1,560-liter stone wine bowl that every new bishop must fill with wine for the public to celebrate.
