Sprengelburg
Oberweiler im Tal, Germany, Germany
Sprengelburg, also called Springeburg, is a small ruined hill castle on the border between the villages of Eßweiler and Oberweiler im Tal in the Kusel district of Rhineland‑Palatinate, Germany.
It sits on a spur of the Königsberg just west of the state road L 372, overlooking the Eßweiler Tal and the small stream below, and was built around the turn of the 13th to 14th century probably as a local stronghold for ministerial knights serving the Wildgrafen (Rheingrafen) of Grumbach.
The castle was destroyed in the 14th century, likely by attackers from Strasbourg, and after that remained in ruin while the surrounding area later developed into the modern villages. In the late 20th century the site was archaeologically investigated and the outline of the square curtain wall and a round tower were reconstructed on the original foundations.
