Squillace Castle
Italy, Italy
Squillace Castle, also known as the Norman Castle of Squillace, is a medieval fortress that stands on a hill overlooking the historic town of Squillace in Calabria, southern Italy.
Built by the Normans in the 11th century on the site of earlier Byzantine fortifications, it occupied a strategic position with views across the Gulf of Squillace and served as an important defensive stronghold for centuries. Over time, the castle was modified by successive rulers, including the Swabians, Aragonese, and the powerful Borgia family, whose coat of arms can still be seen above the entrance.
Its architecture reflects these different historical influences, with massive stone walls, towers, and fortified structures added over many centuries. Today, the castle is one of Calabria’s most important historic landmarks. Visitors come to explore its impressive remains, learn about its long history, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and Ionian coast.
