Stapelburg Castle
Germany, Germany
Stapelburg Castle is a medieval ruin perched on a prominent hill near the village of Stapelburg in Germany's Harz Mountains, built before 1306 by the Counts of Wernigerode to guard a vital trade route linking their ancestral seat to the imperial city of Goslar while serving as a toll station.
It changed hands multiple times, passing to the Diocese of Halberstadt in 1394 for 600 marks, then to various nobles before returning to the Counts of Stolberg-Wernigerode in 1722 through negotiations and a Prussian decree in 1727.
By the 18th century, the castle fell into decay from weather and human activity, leaving picturesque remnants amid scenic northern Harz foothills that draw hikers today.
