Starkenburg
Germany, Germany
Starkenburg is a medieval hilltop castle ruin at 295 meters elevation on Schlossberg hill above Heppenheim an der Bergstraße in Hesse, Germany.
Built in 1065 by Lorsch Abbey monks as Burcheldon to protect against raids—first documented as Starkimberg in 1206—it evolved into a formidable fortress under the Electorate of Mainz, featuring wooden towers, earthworks, and later stone reconstructions imitating French models.
Conquered only twice during the Thirty Years' War despite its strength as the region's second-most defensible site, it was abandoned in 1765, partially demolished, and now offers hiking trails with remnants of walls, ramparts, and a rebuilt keep amid panoramic Odenwald views.
