Stauf Castle
Eisenberg, Germany, Germany
Stauf Castle is the ruin of one of the oldest documented spur castles in Germany's Palatinate region, perched at 327 meters above sea level on a wooded ridge south of Stauf village in Eisenberg, Donnersbergkreis, Rhineland-Palatinate, overlooking the Eisbach valley.
Likely built before 1000 AD and first recorded around 1012 as "castellum Stoufenburc" during the Salian dynasty, it featured an outer bailey, middle bailey, and inner core that served local counts until destruction in 1525 amid the German Peasants' War.
Today, scant remnants reward a short 10-minute forest hike from Stauf with sweeping panoramic views across rolling hills to Steinborn and Ramsen, making it a serene spot for history buffs and picnickers amid the Pfalz's scenic highlands.
Preserved since 1871 by local groups before passing to Eisenberg in 2000, the site blends ancient heritage with natural tranquility.
