Steckelberg Castle
Schlüchtern, Germany, Germany
Steckelberg Castle is a ruined medieval hilltop fortress near Ramholz in the Schlüchtern borough of Hesse, Germany, strategically positioned to guard ancient north-south trade routes including a historic wine road from Fulda to Franconia.
Dating back to early medieval earthworks with a circular rampart from around 1131, it evolved under the von Steckelberg family until destroyed in 1276 as a robber baron stronghold, later rebuilt nearby in 1388 by the von Hutten family who resided there until the late 1600s.
The site withstood peasant uprisings in 1525 and Thirty Years' War damage before abandonment around 1700, now featuring stabilized rectangular curtain walls, a turret with 1509 residential modifications like a chimney and portal, plus nearby Old Steckelberg ruins, drawing hikers for its evocative remnants and panoramic views.
