Steinvikholm Castle
Norway, Norway
Steinvikholm Castle is a medieval island fortress on the Skatval peninsula in Stjørdal Municipality, Trøndelag, Norway, built between 1525 and 1532 by Olav Engelbrektsson, Norway's last Catholic archbishop of Nidaros, as the largest construction project of the Norwegian Middle Ages. Strategically positioned in Åsenfjorden off Trondheimsfjord with thick stone walls up to 4.4 meters, two massive towers (one 20 meters in diameter), and a small courtyard of about 400 square meters, it served as a residence and military stronghold against Danish influence and Lutheran Reformation threats. Surrendered without battle in 1537 after Engelbrektsson's exile, it later became a quarry for local building materials until excavations from 1894 preserved the ruins, now a cultural heritage site hosting tours, events like an annual opera, and symbolizing Catholic Norway's final stand.
