Verified Stevens-Coolidge House & Gardens

North Andover, Massachusetts, United States

Stevens‑Coolidge House & Gardens is a 91‑acre estate in North Andover, Massachusetts, built around an elegant early‑20th‑century Colonial Revival house that was once the summer home of diplomat John Gardner Coolidge and his wife, Helen Stevens Coolidge, heirs of a local founding family.

The property began as Ashdale Farm in 1729 and was transformed between about 1914 and 1918 into a refined “country place” style retreat, with formal gardens, a walled rose garden, a French‑style potager (kitchen garden), greenhouses, and a serpentine brick wall, all set within meadows and woodlands.

After Helen Coolidge died in 1962, she left the estate to The Trustees of Reservations, which now operates it as a historic house and garden site open to the public, hosting tours, seasonal flower displays, and educational programs.

Today visitors can walk through the gardens, see interior rooms filled with Asian art, American furniture, and European decorative pieces, and enjoy the property as a quiet, scenic getaway in the heart of Essex County.
