Stiftsburg Wittlage
Germany, Germany
Stiftsburg Wittlage near Bad Essen, Germany, is a medieval lowland fortress commissioned around 1309 by Bishop Engelbert II of Osnabrück to secure the northeastern border against threats from Ravensberg, Minden, and Diepholz.
Expanded with defensive walls by his successor and later featuring a 15th-century hall (Aula) built by Bishop Otto von Hoya plus an outer bailey, the site includes a prominent 32-meter seven-story bergfried tower with thick walls, vaults, a chimney, and garderobe.
Damaged during the Thirty Years' War by Swedish occupation until 1650, it transitioned into an administrative seat with an Amtshaus added in 1726-1728, retaining today a dry moat, partial ramparts, and key structures as a preserved monument.
