Stilo Castle
Italy, Italy
Stilo Castle, also known as the Norman Castle of Stilo, is a medieval fortress perched on Monte Consolino above the historic town of Stilo in Calabria, southern Italy.
It was built in the 11th century by the Normans under Roger I of Sicily and occupies a commanding position with sweeping views of the surrounding mountains, valleys, and Ionian coast. Throughout the Middle Ages, the castle served as an important military stronghold and was at times used as a prison. Its strategic location helped protect the region, and it became one of the key Norman fortifications in Calabria.
Today, the castle is a popular historical attraction known for its dramatic setting, impressive ruins, and panoramic scenery. Visitors can reach it via scenic walking paths from Stilo, one of Calabria’s most beautiful historic towns, which is also famous for its Byzantine heritage and the nearby Cattolica church.
