Stolzenfels Castle
Koblenz, Germany, Germany
Stolzenfels Castle is a palace‑like building on the left bank of the Rhine just outside Koblenz in Rhineland‑Palatinate, Germany, originally built as a 13th‑century toll castle by the Archbishop of Trier to control river traffic and collect tolls until the early 15th century.
It was destroyed by French troops in 1689, then used as a quarry until the ruins were given to the Prussian Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm IV in 1823, who had it rebuilt from 1836 onward into a Neo‑Gothic summer residence according to designs by architects Karl Friedrich Schinkel and August Stüler.
Today Schloss Stolzenfels is one of the best‑known examples of Rhine Romanticism, combining a colorful palace with spacious interior rooms and an extensive landscape park designed by Peter Joseph Lenné, and it forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley that visitors can tour from nearby Koblenz.
