Styrum
Mülheim, Germany
Schloss Styrum in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany, dates back over 900 years with its first documented mention in 1067.
Originally a royal estate, it became the seat of the Counts of Limburg-Styrum around the 13th century, who expanded it into a fortified noble residence. The castle was significantly remodeled in 1658 in Baroque style, adding characteristic round-arched windows, a garden terrace, and a grand manor house, marking a period of prosperity.
In 1890, it was purchased by industrialist August Thyssen, who restored and enhanced the estate, using it as a director’s residence.
After passing through various hands, the castle came under city ownership in 1960, later transformed into a restaurant, artist studio, and community center for the elderly.
