Swabian-Angevin Fortress
Lucera, Italy, Italy
The Swabian-Angevin Fortress in Lucera, Italy, was originally built in 1233 by Emperor Frederick II on the foundations of a Roman citadel.
It was designed to house Saracen rebels relocated from Sicily, serving as a military stronghold and imperial palace. Later, between 1269 and 1283, Charles I of Anjou transformed the structure into a fortified castle and permanent military garrison, adding extensive walls and adapting it for defensive and administrative purposes.
The fortress once featured more than twenty towers, a moat, and nearly a kilometer of defensive walls, enclosing the city's core. Lucera was historically known as the most Arab city in Apulia, with a significant Muslim population who contributed to its cultural and economic life before their 14th-century expulsion.
The fortress today stands as a remarkable reminder of Lucera’s layered history, blending medieval military architecture with the cultural legacies of its diverse inhabitants. Despite damage and partial demolitions in later centuries, it remains a significant historic monument and a key landmark in Lucera.
