Swallow Nest Castle
Neckarsteinach, Germany
Swallow Nest Castle, also known as Burg Schadeck, in Neckarsteinach, Germany, was built around 1335 by Archbishop Balduin of Mainz and Trier.
It is the youngest of the four castles in Neckarsteinach and is uniquely perched on a steep rocky spur above the Neckar River, giving it a striking appearance like a bird’s nest, which inspired its nickname. The castle was originally built to collect tolls from river traffic and was ruled by various vassal families.
It faced destruction in the late 15th century due to feuds and conflicts and has remained a picturesque ruin since then. Today, the castle features dramatic ruins with remnants of curtain walls, a covered wall-walk with small towers, and offers panoramic views of the Neckar River valley and the nearby Dilsberg fortress.
It is state-owned, open to the public free of charge, and a symbol of Neckarsteinach’s rich medieval heritage.
