Swan Lake Iris Gardens in Sumter, South Carolina, began in 1927 as a private fishing retreat for Hamilton Carr Bland, who planted Japanese irises that initially failed but later thrived after being discarded in a swamp, creating a stunning natural display.

The gardens now cover 150 acres and feature more than 120 varieties of irises, making it one of the nation’s most intensive collections. It is the only public park in the U.S. to showcase all eight species of swans, surrounded by ponds, colorful islands, and abundant wildlife.

Over the years, the gardens expanded with additions like the Braille Garden, Butterfly Garden, and Heath Pavilion, and they host several annual events including the Iris Festival and Fantasy of Lights. Recognized as a Level II Arboretum, Swan Lake offers walking trails, sculptures by notable artists, a visitor center with tours and a gift shop, and free daily admission, making it a cherished destination for nature lovers and the local community.​
