Tangermünde Castle
Tangermünde, Germany, Germany
Tangermünde Castle is a medieval fortress overlooking the Elbe River in Tangermünde, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, first mentioned in 1009 as a protective stronghold for the town founded around 1000.
Expanded by Emperor Charles IV in 1373 into a Kaiserpfalz imperial palace during its Golden Age as a Hanseatic hub, it featured Brick Gothic architecture with towers like the 50-meter Kapitelturm and served as a residence for Hohenzollern electors until a 1488 revolt shifted power to Berlin.
Burned in 1640 during the Thirty Years' War and rebuilt in 1902, its remnants including the Gefängnisturm prison tower and Alte Kanzlei from 1376 now anchor the Castle Museum in the Schlossfreiheit, preserving its role in over a millennium of regional history.
