Tanglewood Park Arboretum
North Carolina, United States
Tanglewood Park Arboretum in North Carolina is part of a historic estate originally claimed by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1584 and settled by several European families in the 1700s.
The property was owned by William Neal Reynolds, brother of tobacco magnate R.J. Reynolds, in the early 20th century and expanded to over 1,100 acres. Referred to as Tanglewood Farm, it was renowned for breeding thoroughbred harness horses.
The arboretum and gardens were developed by Kate Reynolds, who employed master gardener Frank Lustig for over 60 years, resulting in extensive native and ornamental plantings, including the Rose Garden, arboretum, and Fragrance Garden. After being willed to the citizens of Forsyth County in 1951, it became a public recreational park emphasizing southern charm, natural beauty, and horticultural education.
Today, the arboretum features diverse plant collections and gardens and serves as a serene community space preserving history, offering walking trails, and supporting various outdoor activities.
