Tanstein Castle
Dahn, Germany, Germany
Tanstein Castle near Dahn in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, forms part of the massive Dahn castle complex alongside Altdahn and Grafendahn, built between 1100 and 1127 on western red sandstone rock outcrops linked by a bridge, making it one of the earliest in the group at roughly 200 meters long.
First tied to Anshelmus de Tannicka around 1127 and later an imperial fief under Emperor Frederick Barbarossa in 1189, it housed the von Dahn family as imperial ministeriales from the 13th century, passing to Speyer bishops in 1328 before Frederick of Dahn bought it outright in 1512 amid feuds with figures like Franz von Sickingen.
Occupied by Trier troops until 1544 after the Sickingen Feud, abandoned by 1585, and fully razed by French forces in 1689 during the War of the Palatine Succession, its ruins retain domestic buildings, a smithy, smelting furnace, and large roof-water cistern, now a key hiking site with restored elements.
