Terra Castle
Trapani, Italy, Italy
Terra Castle, known in Italian as Castello di Terra, is a medieval fortress located in the historic center of Trapani, Sicily.
Built in the 12th century on the remains of earlier fortifications, it served as the city’s main landward stronghold, protecting access to the harbor and helping defend one of western Sicily’s most important ports. Over the centuries, the castle was expanded and incorporated into Trapani’s larger defensive system, particularly during the Spanish period when new walls and bastions were added to counter the threat of artillery warfare.
It also played a role in the Sicilian uprising of 1848 before gradually losing its military importance. Today, only parts of the original fortress survive, especially sections of its seaward walls. Despite later demolitions and urban development, the remaining ruins continue to reflect Trapani’s long military and maritime history and remain an important symbol of the city’s past.
