The Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morris Township, New Jersey, is a 127-acre public botanical park that was once the summer home of George Griswold Frelinghuysen and his wife Sara Ballantine Frelinghuysen, built in 1891 in the Colonial Revival style.

The estate, known as Whippany Farm, was transformed into an arboretum by their daughter Matilda Frelinghuysen, who began planning for its public use in 1964 and bequeathed the land to Morris County upon her death, leading to the arboretum’s dedication in 1971.

It features more than 3,200 species of trees and flowering plants arranged in formal gardens, woodlands, meadows, and walking trails, with highlights including a rose garden enclosed by a Chippendale brick wall, a pinetum with rare conifers, and expansive landscaped lawns that resemble an English country estate.

The arboretum is on the State and National Register of Historic Places and serves as a peaceful, educational space with programs, tours, and beautiful scenery year-round, making it a treasured natural and cultural landmark in the region.
