Founded in 1931 as a living memorial by Albert Fairchild Holden for his daughter, it specializes in woody plants suitable for northern Ohio's climate and houses around 9,400 species representing 79 plant families. The arboretum includes diverse natural areas, ecologically sensitive habitats, and two National Natural Landmarks accessible by guided hikes.

It features special gardens such as the Wildflower Garden, Rhododendron Garden, and Butterfly Garden along with extensive collections of crabapple, lilac, viburnum, and conifers. A major highlight is the Eleanor Armstrong Smith Glasshouse, showcasing fragile ecosystems like those of Madagascar and Costa Rica.

The arboretum is part of Holden Forests & Gardens, which also includes the Cleveland Botanical Garden, working together to promote conservation, education, and enjoyment of nature in Northeast Ohio.
