The North Carolina Arboretum, established in 1986 and located near Asheville within the Bent Creek Experimental Forest and Pisgah National Forest, spans 434 acres of cultivated gardens and natural forest ecosystems in the Southern Appalachian Mountains.

The land has a long human history, with Native Americans inhabiting it about 14,000 years ago and European settlers farming and milling here from the 1800s. Originally part of the Biltmore Estate owned by George Vanderbilt, the area was intended for a large arboretum designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, but the plan was never realized. The modern arboretum was created through collaboration among civic leaders, universities, and the US Forest Service.

It features highly diverse gardens, including a nationally accredited Native Azalea Collection, a large bonsai display, a holly garden, and the Plants of Promise Garden. The site offers miles of hiking and biking trails, educational programs, art exhibits reflecting Appalachian culture, and conservation-focused initiatives such as a germplasm repository for native plant species.

It serves as both a public botanical garden and a research and education facility, welcoming over half a million visitors annually and hosting events like seasonal light shows and outdoor concerts.
