The Royal Palace in Oslo is the official residence of the Norwegian monarch and one of the country’s most important buildings, symbolizing Norway’s history since 1814.

It stands at the end of Karl Johans gate in central Oslo, built in a neoclassical style between the 1820s and 1849 for King Carl Johan and later permanently used by subsequent Norwegian kings. Today the palace is where the King and Queen live, where the royal court works, and where official functions, state visits, and ceremonies take place.

The building has grand state rooms, including the chapel, throne room, and ballroom, and is surrounded by Palace Park and Palace Square, while the interior is decorated with works by notable Norwegian artists. It is open to the public during the summer months, when guided tours give visitors access to selected reception rooms and a closer look at the palace’s history and daily use.
