Verified The Ruth Bancroft Garden & Nursery

Walnut Creek, California, United States

The Ruth Bancroft Garden in Walnut Creek, California, began in the early 1950s when Ruth Bancroft started planting succulents and drought-tolerant plants on three acres of land that was part of a 400-acre former walnut and pear orchard owned by her husband's family since the 1880s.

She developed the garden over decades by experimenting with plant combinations and creating mounded beds for proper drainage in the region's clay soil. Despite setbacks like a harsh freeze in 1972 that killed many plants, she persisted and her collection grew to over 2,000 species, becoming famous for its bold and diverse dry garden plantings.

In 1988, a visit by horticulturist Frank Cabot to her garden inspired the creation of the Garden Conservancy, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving exceptional American gardens, making the Ruth Bancroft Garden its first official preservation project.

The garden opened to the public in the early 1990s and stands as a landmark example of sustainable, water-wise gardening adapted to California's Mediterranean climate, reflecting Ruth Bancroft's lifelong dedication to horticulture and conservation.
