The State of Montana Arboretum

The State of Montana Arboretum is located on the campus of the University of Montana in Missoula and was officially designated the state arboretum in 1991.

It serves as a living museum featuring more than 2,000 trees that represent eight North American forest regions, showcasing the state's diverse native flora. The arboretum's origins trace back to 1908 when Professor Morton Elrod transplanted 150 native trees from the upper Flathead Valley to the campus, supporting early efforts to create a botanical and forestry educational resource.

Over time, the University of Montana's Forestry School contributed significantly, and extensive plantings now demonstrate various ecological communities including Great Plains, Northeastern Mixed Woods, Southeastern Mixed Forests, and Southern Rocky Mountains species.

It features interpretive trails and is used for education, conservation, and scientific research, offering a scenic, natural experience that highlights Montana’s ecological heritage and diversity.
