Throchi Fort
Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan
Throchi Fort is a historical fortress located in the village of Throchi, near Gulpur in the Kotli district of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan.
It is believed to have been constructed between 1425 and 1460 during the rule of Jasrat, a Khokhar or Gakhar chieftain. The fort was strategically built on a hilltop about 3,700 feet above sea level to oversee and defend the surrounding valley. It features strong stone walls, watchtowers, a prison, water tanks, and rooms indicating its use as a military stronghold prepared for long sieges.
Throchi Fort witnessed key conflicts, including battles involving Sikh and Dogra forces, and played a notable role during the 1947 fighting for control of the region when local fighters took it from Dogra rulers. After Pakistan's independence, the fort has been managed by the Pakistan Army, which uses it for military communications and control purposes, although the site remains accessible to tourists.
The fort's design and location highlight its historical military importance in the defense of the area and it remains a significant cultural heritage site in Azad Kashmir today.
