Tinnum-Burg
Sylt, Germany, Germany
Tinnum-Burg is the best-preserved ringwall fortification on Sylt island, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, located amid the Tinnum meadows southwest of Tinnum village.
Built around the birth of Christ in the early Roman Imperial period, this earthen rampart spans 120 meters in diameter, rises up to 8 meters high with a 440-meter circumference, and includes at least two gates (east and south) plus an encircling ditch, constructed from turf, earth, and torf in the style of North Frisian round forts.
Originally a Germanic worship site offering refuge from Viking raids in the 8th-10th centuries, excavations in 1870, 1948, and 1976 uncovered sod houses, ceramics, tools, and trade items like Norwegian whetstones, confirming its cultic, defensive, and possibly administrative roles; it's the last of three ancient Sylt forts, with others at Archsum (destroyed) and Rantum (sand-buried).
Freely accessible today as an archaeological monument, it once protruded island-like during pre-1938 storm floods before marsh diking.
