Tivaouane

Thiès Region, Senegal

---

Tivaouane, located in Senegal’s Thiès Region, is one of the country’s most important religious cities and a major center of the Tijaniyya Sufi brotherhood.

The city gained prominence through the work of the renowned Islamic scholar El-Hadji Malick Sy, whose teachings helped establish Tivaouane as a leading center of Islamic education and spirituality in West Africa. Every year, millions of pilgrims and visitors gather in Tivaouane for the Gamou, the celebration of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad, making it one of the largest religious events in the region.

The city’s grand mosques, religious schools, and mausoleums attract devotees from across Senegal and neighboring countries. Beyond its spiritual significance, Tivaouane serves as an important administrative, agricultural, and transportation hub within the region. Its blend of religious heritage, cultural influence, and strong community traditions makes it one of Senegal’s most respected and influential cities.
