Tobacco Caye is a tiny island in Belize, about 10 miles east of Dangriga, covering roughly three acres. Known for its intimate and laid-back atmosphere, the island has a permanent population of around 20 people and features several small lodges catering to travelers.
It lies within the South Water Caye Marine Reserve, part of the Belize Barrier Reef, offering excellent opportunities for snorkeling and scuba diving with vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life just off the shore. The island was originally named for early tobacco cultivation and was heavily damaged by Hurricane Mitch in 1998 but has since been rebuilt. Visitors enjoy a rustic, off-grid experience with no roads or cars, spending days relaxing in hammocks, snorkeling, and exploring underwater.
Transportation is by boat from Dangriga, with options for guided tours and diving trips to nearby reefs.
