Torderød gård in Moss, Norway, traces its origins to the Viking Age before 800 AD, with the first written mention in 1338 as a modest farm named after the Old Norse "Thordruga," meaning manure heap, hinting at early agricultural use. Merchant Andreas Chrystie bought the estate in 1737 primarily for its land value, and his son David Chrystie senior constructed the current rococo-style main building around 1750-1760 as a summer residence, later remodeled in neoclassical Empire style by David Chrystie junior in 1823 with added floors, columns, and a balcony. Protected since 1923-1924, it passed through owners like the Oppegaard family before Moss municipality acquired it in 1952, converting it into a school until 1987 and now using it for events, representation, and restoration efforts, featuring the region's only preserved Baroque garden with alleys, terraces, and family gravestones.
