Torre dell'Orologio

Italy, Italy

Torre dell’Orologio, commonly known as St. Mark’s Clock Tower, is one of Venice’s most famous landmarks and stands at the entrance to the Merceria beside Piazza San Marco. Built during the late 15th century, it is considered a masterpiece of Venetian Renaissance architecture and has served as a symbol of the city for more than 500 years. The tower is best known for its remarkable astronomical clock, which displays the time, phases of the moon, and signs of the zodiac. Above the clock are iconic features including the winged Lion of Saint Mark, a statue of the Virgin and Child, and two large bronze figures, known as the “Moors,” that strike a bell to mark the hours. Originally designed to be visible from the Venetian lagoon and showcase the wealth and prestige of the Republic of Venice, the tower remains one of the city’s most admired historic monuments and can be visited through guided tours.
