Torre di Belfiore
Italy, Italy
Torre di Belfiore is a medieval watchtower and fortified site located near Capolona in the province of Arezzo, Tuscany.
The settlement is thought to have origins linked to the Lombard period, although the surviving structures were likely developed later during the feudal era as a strategic outpost for controlling movement through the surrounding territory. Historical records mention Belfiore as early as 1161, when it was assigned to the Abbey of San Gennaro by Emperor Frederick I.
Over time, it served as an important defensive position for Arezzo and later came under Florentine influence during the political struggles of medieval Tuscany. Today, the site preserves the remains of a tower and sections of the former fortified complex. Recent archaeological investigations have uncovered walls, corner towers, and building foundations, providing new insight into the castle's layout and making Torre di Belfiore an important historical and archaeological landmark in the Casentino area.
