Torre di Piubega, also known as the Torre Civica, is the most important surviving part of the medieval castle that once protected the town of Piubega in the province of Mantua. The original fortress dates back to the 12th century and was surrounded by walls and a defensive moat, serving as a key stronghold on the borderlands of the Gonzaga territories. Built of brick with a square plan, the tower originally formed the castle’s fortified entrance and was used for defense, surveillance, and the storage of weapons. Its elevated lookout level allowed guards to monitor the surrounding countryside and control access to the settlement. Most of the castle was demolished in the early 18th century, but the tower was preserved and remains a prominent landmark in Piubega’s historic center. Today, it stands as a well-preserved reminder of the town’s medieval past and its long association with the Gonzaga era.
