Torrione Martiniano is a remarkable Renaissance fortification in the town of Cagli, in Italy’s Marche region. Designed in the late 15th century by the renowned architect and military engineer Francesco di Giorgio Martini for Duke Federico da Montefeltro, it formed part of an advanced defensive system created to withstand the growing use of firearms in warfare. The tower was originally linked to a larger hilltop fortress by a covered underground passage known as the “soccorso coverto,” which is still accessible today and includes more than 360 steps. Although the main fortress was dismantled in 1502 to prevent its capture by Cesare Borgia, the Torrione survived and remains an outstanding example of military architecture from a period of technological transition. Today, the Torrione Martiniano is one of Cagli’s most important landmarks. Its distinctive elliptical shape, impressive interior spaces, and historical significance attract visitors, while the building also serves as a contemporary sculpture center showcasing works by internationally known artists.
