TU Brunswick Botanical Garden
Braunschweig, Germany, Germany
The Botanical Garden of TU Braunschweig (Botanischer Garten der Technischen Universität Braunschweig) is a 4-hectare university botanical garden located in Braunschweig, Lower Saxony, Germany, at Humboldtstraße 1, founded in 1840 by Johann Heinrich Blasius on the banks of the River Oker on the grounds of a former stately mansion.
Originally started in 1828 as a smaller garden on the opposite bank of the Oker, the garden expanded to its current location and now hosts approximately 4,000 plant species, representing about 1.1% to 1.5% of the world's flora. The garden serves primarily as an outdoor laboratory for experimental plant research and teaching for the University's Institute for Plant Biology, while also contributing to species conservation by providing refuge for rare and endangered plants and offering public recreation.
Its diverse collections include a systematic section, arboretum, alpine garden, fern grotto, rosary, an 800-square-meter Baroque farming garden with a stream and waterfall, medicinal plants, water and bog plants, and Heath and moor plants, while the greenhouses cultivate succulents, bromeliads, orchids, tropical water plants, and insectivorous plants.
