Turmburg-Ruine Walluf
Walluf, Germany, Germany
Turmburg-Ruine Walluf in Walluf, Germany, is the remnant of a rare early medieval tower castle dating to around the 10th century, built to protect a Rhine River crossing from invading Normans on the site of an even older settlement mentioned as early as 770.
The sturdy square tower, with walls up to 2.3 meters thick made of cast masonry measuring about 9.6 by 11.6 meters, once featured a moat, bailey, Romanesque residence, and charnel house before its destruction around 1200, after which ownership passed to local nobility.
Excavated and exposed in 1931-1933 near the Johanniskirche ruins on Johannisfeld east of Niederwalluf, it now stands as a historic landmark amid evidence of Celtic, Roman, and Carolingian activity, offering a glimpse into early German fortifications in the Rheingau region.
