Tyre Coast Nature Reserve
Lebanon, Lebanon
The Tyre Coast Nature Reserve is a protected marine area along the Mediterranean coast south of the ancient city of Tyre in southern Lebanon, covering about 380 hectares and home to the country’s largest remaining stretch of sandy beach and coastal dunes.
It shelters a mosaic of habitats, including wide sandy and pebble beaches, coastal freshwater springs, wetlands, and dune vegetation, which support diverse wildlife such as the endangered loggerhead and green sea turtles that nest there from May to October.
The reserve is also a key stopover for migratory birds, hosts rare and endemic plant species, and combines conservation with controlled ecotourism, education, and small‑scale farming, while facing pressures from littering, beach‑use activities, and unsustainable agriculture that threaten its fragile ecosystems.
