Tyredagh Castle (Ruins)

Tyredagh, Ireland, Ireland

---

Tyredagh Castle is the ruined remains of a 16th-century tower house located in County Clare, Ireland.

Built by the MacNamara family, it later passed through the hands of several powerful local families, including the O’Briens, and played a role in the region’s turbulent history during the late medieval and early modern periods. The castle experienced repeated changes in ownership, periods of abandonment, and eventual decline.

Although it was repaired at various times, it was ultimately forfeited and fell into ruin by the late 17th century. Today, Tyredagh Castle survives as an atmospheric ruin on a limestone outcrop overlooking the surrounding countryside. Parts of its thick stone walls, vaulted ground floor, and architectural details remain visible, offering a fascinating glimpse into the defensive tower houses that once dominated the Irish landscape.
