Tyrol Castle (Castel Tirolo) is a medieval castle located near the village of Tirolo, above the city of Merano in South Tyrol, northern Italy.

Built before 1100, it was the ancestral seat of the Counts of Tyrol and gave its name to the entire Tyrol region, making it one of the most historically important castles in the Alps. Over the centuries, the castle served as a center of political power and was expanded with impressive medieval structures, including fortified walls, a keep, chapels, and richly decorated Romanesque portals.

The site is particularly known for its historic frescoes and for housing one of the oldest known depictions of the Tyrolean eagle. Today, Tyrol Castle is home to the South Tyrolean Museum of Culture and Provincial History, where visitors can explore the region’s heritage through exhibitions and archaeological finds. Its hilltop location also offers spectacular views of the surrounding valleys and mountains, making it a major cultural and tourist attraction in South Tyrol.
